What do Superbike races and DOC Prosecco have in common? More than you’d think — they’re both very European, and specifically very Italian — with European born drivers and sponsors like Alfa Romeo, Ducati, Pirelli, and Prosecco. DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) Prosecco has always played a part in celebrating victorious occasions and la dolce vita in general, but Prosecco has recently taken its rightful place on the winner’s stand, knocking out French Champagne with a one two punch. Although many of the 41,000 spectators lining the track on a recent September weekend in Laguna Seca in Monterey, California might have had Budweiser or Coors Light in their coolers, the racers in the winner’s tent were celebrating with nothing less than Italian bubbly. In the spectator’s tent, we enjoyed never ending glasses of Mionetto, thanks to the ever-present DOC Prosecco Girls. If there was ever a beauty contest between the Bud Girls and these gold clad ladies, there’s no doubt in our minds who would win. On Saturday September 29th we witnessed an amazing win by Tom Sykes. On the podium he toasted his recently married brother and new bride who were there that day. Tom was upset the next day by Eugene Laverty who managed to win the race in the eleventh hour. Eugene dedicated his win to track engineer Marco Bertolatti who had just became a father.
The ENI FIM Superbike World Championship Calendar started this February in Australia, and then continued in Spain, Italy, and Portugal from April to June. In July the races were held in Moscow, and in September the riders traveled to Germany, Turkey, and California. The last race of 2013 occurs on October 20, 2013 in Jerez, Spain.
To put it simply, Superbike races are EXCITING. Riders from all around the world compete on extremely different tracks each with crazy corkscrew and hairpin turns while controlling motorcycles traveling at more than 250 miles per hour. If, like us, you can’t get to Jerez this year you can still catch The Superbike World Championship on television. Just make sure that you have plenty of Prosecco on hand. Our cooler will be filled with some of our favorite producers such as Caposaldo, Mionetto, Zonin, Villa Sandi, La Tordera, Bottega, and La Jara. We hope that yours will be too.
