This week’s new events

Winter Droving | St Andrew’s Day celebrations | Independent Label Market | Out & about

Winter Droving, Penrith

Penrith may no longer be a destination for weary drovers and their herds trekking across the hills into Cumbria’s Eden valley, but livestock will roam the streets once again during Winter Droving, which kicks off the festive season with a celebration of the town’s agricultural heritage. Dress up as either a drover or a farm animal and join giant geese, sheep and cow paper lanterns in a torchlight procession to Great Dockray, the town’s historic marketplace. Or form a tug-of-war team and compete for the Drovers Cup, which also features the not-so-authentically rural pursuits of hay bale relay, pint-passing and sausage-eating.

St Andrew’s Day celebrations, Nationwide

We have another celebration to get under our belts before Christmas comes: St Andrew’s Day. Edinburgh’s Storytelling Centre is offering up a day of traditional tales, music and food; it’s free in at the Palace of Holyroodhouse; Glasgow’s city centre plays host to a family fun day that will be topped off with a ceilidh; and the spiritual home of the festivities, Fife, comes alive with a large food and drink festival. Homesick Scots in London should head to Cecil Sharp House for the Ceilidh Club’s St Andrew’s Day special.

Independent Label Market

Those who are nonplussed by Spotify’s subscription model and prefer vinyl over download codes will love the ethos of these increasingly regular markets. They offer likeminded independent labels and punters who want to buy direct from them (and bag exclusives) a place to hang out and talk music. Labels on the bill this year include lo-fi indie mainstays Fire Records, kings of the oddities Soul Jazz, and über-cool home to the xx, Young Turks.
