1-4 Inches Of Snow Expected On Hawaii’s Big Island (PHOTOS)

Several inches of snow are expected to fall this evening in Hawaii.

The summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa on Hawaii’s Big Island regularly see temperatures below freezing during the winter and snowfall is not uncommon. In fact, the Big Island often boasts the rare opportunity to both ski and surf in the same day.

Mauna Kea is nearly 14,000 feet above sea level, with Mauna Loa just slightly shorter. Mauna Kea means “white mountain” in Hawaiian, and according to Hawaiian mythology, Poli’ahu, a goddess of snow, lives there.

The volcano is also home to the world-famous Mauna Kea observatory, which is a popular tourist destination for stargazing and sunset hikes.

But tourists will have to steer clear this week. The recent winter advisory warns against high winds and 1-4 inches of snow for the two summits.

Winds are expected to be a sustained 55mph, with gusts as strong as 65 mph. According to forecasters, “layered moisture moving over the Big Island from the southeast will combine with an upper-level trough to produce heavy snow showers and strong winds over the summits.”

The rest of the Aloha State will see showers and thunder storms, and flash flood watches have been issued for parts of the state.
